How to Hydrate Dry Hair During the Summer Heat?

Summer brings heat waves and hot days. Depending on where you live, those days can be very humid or dry as dust. In any case, we sweat more and shower more frequently in the summer. If you tend to wash your hair every time you shower, all those extra showers can strip your scalp of natural oils, making your hair dry and brittle. On top of that, sun, chlorine, and saltwater all contribute to hair dryness during the summer.

Generally, hair becomes dry for two reasons: it either cannot retain moisture or the scalp does not produce enough oil to hydrate the hair. Environmental stressors, damaged cuticles, excessive washing, and chemicals from hair dyes all affect the hair’s ability to retain moisture. As for the scalp, it produces less oil as we age, resulting in drier and more brittle hair. Therefore, we recommend using sulfate-free moisturizing shampoos, avoiding products that contain alcohol, and regularly using conditioners.

It is also important to note that different hair types require different hydration approaches. Coarse hair needs thicker shampoos with aloe vera and argan oil, as well as hair masks made from butter. Curly hair, on the other hand, needs creamier shampoos, and conditioner should be focused on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. Fine hair responds best to products that do not weigh it down, and in this case, conditioner should only be applied to the ends to avoid a greasy scalp.
